Observations On Helicopter Integrated System Testing Based On F/A-18 Experiences

The U.S. Navy's F/A-18 Hornet Strike-Fighter development program preceded the U.S. Army's new advanced light-helicopter program - the LHX - by ten years. A review of both programs shows that they have many similarities. Both involve a significant move forward in systems technology and degree of integration and automation. Both have similar development schedules. The avionics system for the LHX will closely resemble the F/A-18 except for the advances in technology. The F/A-18 developmental test process, the facilities used, and their applicability to advanced systems developments are discussed. Similar approaches and facilities will be required for the successful development of an advanced, highly integrated avionics system like the LHX.
