This paper describes the rotary engine noise and vibration characteristics and some relevant new technologies. Available techniques for vibration minimization which are covered include: (a) identification of vibrational modes of an idealized rotary engine shaft model with the application of Holzer's successive method; (b) analysis of rotor vibration characteristics attendant with its unique movement and its design optimization; and (c) development of AIPI (Air Injection Port Insert) for the reduction of residual gas-caused combustion fluctuations at low load. In addition, how MCPI (Multi-Chamber Port Insert), from which AIPI was developed, reduces exhaust noise is detailed.
