Finite element modeling of various transmission components is discussed. Emphasis is placed on developing a self-contained analytical model from data available during the design process. Only relevant details that are necessary to reproduce the overall dynamics of the components are retained in modeling so that the model does not become excessively large. The approach adopted is such that each component is modeled individually followed by the linking of the component models to obtain the overall transmission model. Procedures for assembling the component models are discussed. Application of the assembled model in gear-mesh excitation analysis is also discussed.
