Requirements for engine control system are becoming more complex and diverse these days for new engine technologies such as variable valve systems. The main requirements are short development time and modification flexibility in its control functions. Model- based technologies have been applied to satisfy these requirements, and typically high performance rapid prototyping controller is used for new control function realization in a short time. However, the developed control function needs more time and cost for transition to the production level hardware, which results in gap among research, development and production. This paper introduces an on-target rapid prototyping technology which enables rapid prototyping of new control function with a production level hardware. A development example of new controller is introduced from concept, through simulation and dynamometer test to vehicle.
