Mobility Warfare is a highly complex interplay of operations involving maneuvers and force-on-force engagements. Possible maneuvers range from strategic deployment into theater down to tactical maneuvers during battlefield operations and can include ground, air, and sea operations. Force-on-Force operations typically vary from brigade size battles to isolated squad sized operations. Both maneuvers and force-on-force engagements can involve platforms, sensors, weapons, C4ISR, and depend heavily on environmental conditions. There are also major differences between these operations in both tempo and spatial scales. Engagements generally occur over a few hours and in a confined region. Maneuvers, on the other hand, can transpire for days and over thousands of square miles. High-fidelity battlefield simulations models, like the Army's Advanced Tactical Combat Model (ATCOM), have been developed to simulate brigade-size force-on-force engagements. These models generally commence the engagement after the primary operational and tactical maneuvers have been completed. As result, these models give a good representation of battle outcome assuming the forces are able to complete maneuvers prior to the main engagements and do not change the maneuver operations based on intelligence or other information. Detailed maneuver models, like Mobility Simulation (MobSim) Model, simulate complex mobility operations involving multiple staging bases, APODs, SPODS, and use detailed deployment planning documents, like TPFDDs. Currently, no single high-fidelity model has been able to treat both mobility and warfighting operations on an equal footing.
