MATURE ENGINE RELIABILITY AT SERVICE INTRODUCTION AN INNOVATIVE PHILOSOPHY

Mature Engine Reliability at Service Introduction (MERSI) is a new and comprehensive philosophy, introduced at Pratt & Whitney Canada, designed to make a step change improvement in gas turbine engine reliability at service introduction. The philosophy is based on the systematic collection, documentation and application of lessons learned along with the rigorous substantiation of that design, with increased margins at representative conditions, in order to meet the customer requirements. Inherent in MERSI is the requirement for mistake proofing by design and steps taken to ensure stable manufacturing processes. The philosophy is innovative in its breadth of application and the means by which it is implemented and tracked. It is a generic approach that is applicable to any product requiring high reliability. MERSI came about due to increased demands for high levels of reliability early in the product life cycle. Also, company business drivers demanded a robust product at entry into service to ensure customer satisfaction and meet company business objectives.
