This simulation assessed pilot-vehicle performance and workload associated with display concepts, vehicle control relationships (CRs), and levels of control (LOC) for multiple UAVs controlled from a manned cockpit. Previous investigations demonstrated effective manned- unmanned teaming with a single UAV. Extending previous research, the current experiment tested seven experimental test pilots in 24 evaluation missions controlling two UAVs. Objective dependent measures for the primary search task included number of targets acquired, sensor utilization, and sensor efficiency. Secondarily, data was collected on accuracy and reaction times to pre-recorded audio commands. Lastly, workload ratings, simulator sickness symptoms, and pilot interviews were collected. Both objective data and subjective ratings supported a side x side display of independently controlled UAVs at LOC 4 (pilot controls sensor and vehicle platforms). Limitations of present day cockpit design may warrant advanced display concepts for teaming with greater than two UAVs. As the responsibility for additional assets increases, costs to pilot’s distribution of attention merits further research.
