- The development of eco-friendly vehicles is not optional anymore. Eco-vehicles, such as HEVs, FCEVs and EVs, are rising as a solution to overcome the recent economic turmoil, even though they have been traditionally considered to meet the tightening emission regulations by major car companies. The HMC has prepared for EVs and HEVs for long time and is planning to commercialize Avante LPI HEVs this year, followed by Sonata HEVs next year. These vehicles are equipped with LiPB systems, which are superior to NiMH batteries in energy efficiency, power and weight. For the efficient operation of the LiPB system, battery management is essential. In this paper, we explain the functions of the BMS for the LiPB system, which will be used for the Sonata HEVs. The functions include SOC estimation, power limit, battery cooling control, fault tolerance, and SOH estimation.
