LOW-COST SENSORY SUBSTITUTION FOR EFFECTIVE HELICOPTER TRAINING

Considering the cost and complexity of helicopter flight training, there is a need to reevaluate the utility of motion-base simulators as training tools. The evidence regarding the superior transfer of training associated with motion-base simulators is mixed. In fact, no motion-base simulator can accurately replicate the sensations associated with flight. The authors conclude that there is no significant value added to having motion-base simulation when modern, high-fidelity visual displays and immersive multi-sensory systems can provide a compelling flight experience with equivalent transfer of training.
