- Present spacecraft cold-plate designs are small in size, relatively complex, and expensive. A new large-size, low-cost approach is required for the new generation of space power modules and platforms. This paper describes an on-going investigation of the feasibility of utilizing large cross-section aluminum extrusions attached side by side to form a large, two-sided cold plate with integral coolant passages. This simply formed assembly provides the thermal and structural characteristics to meet spacecraft requirements. This same approach is also applicable to two-sided spacecraft radiators.
