- In the current work we have investigated the potential use of LiBOB as both a conductive salt and an additive for electrolytes in Li-ion batteries. It was found that LiBOB suppresses Mn dissolution from LiMn2O4 spinel. Almost no Mn dissolution was detected in pure LiBOB electrolytes, independent of the spinel composition. It is quite interesting that as little as 2% LiBOB added to a LiPF electrolyte is enough to reduce 10 times Mn dissolution, thus increasing the cycling stability of the spinel electrodes. LiBOB suppresses PC co-intercalation into graphite. The addition of only 2% LiBOB to the state-of-the-art LiPF6 electrolytes suffices to form a stable SEI film, thus protecting graphite from partial exfoliation. The LiBOB graphite cells exhibited a much lower irreversible capacity in the first cycle in comparison with the pure LiPF6 electrolyte. The DSC/TG measurements showed that LiBOB improves significantly the thermal stability of graphite in PC-containing electrolytes. LiBOB was found to shift the oxygen release from the NCA layered structure to much higher temperatures in comparison with the LiPF electrolyte.
