An Interview with the Father of Army Aviation LTG Robert R. Williams, USMA '40

This is an interview conducted by Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Paul J. Fardink with Lieutenant General (Retired) Robert R. Williams. Lieutenant General Williams is considered by many to be a major influence in the seminal stage of Army Aviation and its ensuing growth into the world's most formidable helicopter force. His involvement was apparent not only in the evolving force structure but also in the technology, tactics, training, and doctrine. Simply stated, "He did it all." And he did it as a commander or while serving in key staff positions. This interview is written with frequent reference to the United States Military Academy at West Point. The intent is to serve as both a recorded oral history and as an inspiration to the nation's future leaders and Army Aviators.
