Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) play a transformative role in enhancing the efficiency, safety, and sustainability of India’s transportation networks. As urbanization and vehicle ownership continue to grow, Indian cities face increasing demands on their infrastructure, resulting in challenges such as traffic congestion, pollution, and travel delays. ITS leverages advanced technologies-including real-time data analytics, communication networks, and automation-to optimize traffic management, improve public transport services, and provide timely information to commuters. In the Indian context, ITS applications such as electronic toll collection, adaptive traffic signals, smart parking solutions, and incident management systems have begun to demonstrate positive impacts on mobility and road safety. Government initiatives and policy frameworks are actively promoting the integration of ITS with ongoing infrastructure development projects, fostering innovation and encouraging domestic manufacturing under the “Make in India” program. While challenges remain in terms of infrastructure readiness, interoperability, and capacity building, collaborative efforts among public agencies, private stakeholders, and technology providers are paving the way for scalable ITS solutions tailored to India’s diverse transportation landscape. This paper explores the current status, benefits, and future prospects of ITS in India, emphasizing its potential to contribute significantly to sustainable urban mobility, economic growth, and improved quality of life for citizens.
