Integration of Link 16 into Military Helicopters

Over the last 15 years, implementation of Link 16 has supported the development of an integrated air picture. During this development Link 16 message formats and tactics evolved to support a well-defined command and control (C2) network comprising major C2 nodes (AWACS, E2-C...etc) supported by front line fighters (F-15, F-18 ...etc.) Since helicopter assets could not readily support the development of the integrated air picture nor support the neutralization of hostile air tracks, they were not included during the early phases of Link 16 development. Link 16 evolution has recently focused on developing the integrated ground picture to support time-critical-targeting missions. The integrated ground picture is support by C2 platforms equipped with radar optimized for the detection of ground track (i.e. JSTARS). The importance of the integrated ground picture provides the opportunity for Army command and control helicopters to play an active role in Link 16 operations. Similarly, the deployment of the next generation of Navy helicopters provides the opportunity for rotary wing aircraft to participate in the development of the integrated surface/subsurface tactical picture.
