A new device has been developed for adjusting the speed difference both between two wheels and among axles without installing any interaxle differential on multi-axle-drive vehicles. The advantages of the integrated differential system (IDS) over the conventional differential system (CDS) are summarized as:
  1. 1.
    The harmful power circulation (or single axle braking) is completely eliminated;
  2. 2.
    The spinning of any of the wheels is automatically prevented;
  3. 3.
    All the wheels can be served as drive wheels throughout the operation;
  4. 4.
    Better fuel economy is obtained; and
  5. 5.
    Handling characteristics of the vehicle is improved.
The new IDS has already been made and assembled and field test results verify that it meets all the designed requirements.
