Authors Abstract
Content
The analysis of windshear related accidents and incidents during the takeoff and approach phases of flight provide insight into the windshear problem. Piloted simulator recreations of accident scenarios provide a pilots view and an engineering view of the causal factors for these occurrences. These analyses have provided further insight into the difficult piloting task that a windshear encounter presents to the flight crew. The “Lessons Learned” may lead to improved safety of flight through improved training techniques.
This paper will examine the following phases of flight separately and offer related discussion:
  1. 1.
Encounter on the Runway During Takeoff.
  2. 2.
    Encounter After Liftoff.
  3. 3.
    Encounter on Approach/Landing.
Based on these analyses, the key lessons learned from windshear encounters will be reviewed.
