The multi-entry system of mining the Pittsburgh Seam, Federal No. 2 Mine is described, as is the room and pillar retreat mining method. Next, the author notes that a relatively static technology, federal mining laws, and ecological requirements have contributed to lower production and increased mining costs, causing problems for the industry. Various possible solutions to these problems are offered. Finally, current research and development projects are discussed, and future developments predicted.
