Improving Situational Awareness Through the Use of Intuitive Pictorial Displays

The aviation industry generally acknowledges the need to improve situational awareness among airline flight crews. One means of attaining this goal is the increased use of intuitive pictorial displays. Advances in display technology have made the portrayal of very complicated pictorial formats possible. The point has been reached where the question is no longer what information can be displayed, but what should be displayed, and in what form. One program is now under way to explore different methods of optimizing situational information in transport Head-Up Displays (HUDs).
