New engine programs such as the Army's 7800 have placed high emohasis on reducing operating and suooort costs (O&S) througl( inoroved RAN; he proper balance betwe n benefits and costs must be maintained throughout the engine's entire life cycle by addressing RAM and supportability. In the past, enphasi was placed on unit production cost; operating and supoort now receive equal emphasis. The Avco Lycominc TEXTRON/ Pratt & Whitney (APW) team utilizes the PAM Manager as the 0&S focal point for inout into the life cycle cost organization. A key element in lowering costs is high reliability, which i supported by designing basic engine components to last the life cycle of the program. Maintainability, Human Engineering, and Manpower Personnel Integration are designed into the APW800 engine. Aggressive Mockup reviews and Maintenance Demonstrations are important elements of the development program. An engine with RAM designed in for the man in the field provides the necessary elements to insure satisfactory performance of airframe cost agreements, and to provide a "balanced" powerplant system encompassing the technical and support needs to fulfill future missions.
