The General Electric T700-GE-700 turboshaft engine currently under development by the U.S. Army for UTTAS (Utility Tactical Transport Aircraft System) and AAH (Advanced Attack Helicopter) represents a new generation of advanced technology engines in the 1500 horsepower class. This paper will describe how such an engine will provide notable improvements in performance, operation, and economy for this new generation of VTOL vehicles. A composite of the UTTAS and AAH helicopters will illustrate these improvements. Today the helicopter is achieving a new generation of growth that promises even more potential than shown by comparable fixed-wing aircraft. The ultimate operational flexibility which the rotary wing offers is yet to be fully appreciated. Continuing powerplant advances plus additional breakthroughs in rotors/transmissions are the prime reasons why helicopters of the future may be much improved over current examples.
