Sprague Controls Inc. has developed a small passive infrared system that measures road surface temperatures from a moving vehicle. The two part device has a sensor head which mounts on the mirror bracket of a vehicle and a standard two inch round display for mounting in the dash. The display indicates the road surface temperature, the outside air temperature and a warning that caution is advised for possible road icing. The amount of raw information obtained from the sensor far exceeds the ability of a driver to understand or interpret the results. Therefore a major part of this product is the method used to digest this information and present it to the driver in the most useful way. This involves a combination of digital signal processing and fuzzy logic which we call Ergonomic Signal Processing. This paper describes the product, the data, and the Ergonomic Signal Processing techniques used.
