As new automotive applications for lithium batteries emerge, cell design and performance requirements are constantly evolving and present unique challenges to traditional battery producers. Vehicle manufacturers are targeting a 10 to 15-year useful battery life. This need for reliable battery performance over a long term, combined with the requirement for more energy, extended cycle life, and increased power density within a limited packaging space, must be factored into the design of these large format lithium-ion cells. As a result, new battery chemistries and component materials that are specifically tailored to automotive applications have emerged. These materials have different thermal, mechanical and electrochemical characteristics from those used in conventional portable electronics applications. For example, the separator, which is a functional polymer membrane that provides an insulating barrier between the positive and negative electrodes of the battery while allowing the exchange of lithium-ions from one side to the other through specially engineered pathways, must be carefully matched to ensure optimal performance within these batteries with newer chemistries. Here, we explore test results that highlight the performance of Polypropylene (PP)-based separator membranes in large format PHEV, EV and HEV lithium batteries.
