High Performance SMC Composites

This paper discusses the development of a Sheet Molding Compound (SMC) designed exclusively for bumper beams with a lower glass content that offers increased strength and cost effectiveness to meet the performance requirements of a major European automobile manufacturer. Based on this success the use of high performance composites will extend to other automotive structural applications as the industry gains experience in designing and working with these materials.
