An excerpt from the article: My subject is the Helicopter in Anti-Submarine Warfare. Before getting into the subject however, I would like to give a little background concerning the helicopter in the Navy. In tne summer of 1946 the first Navy helicopter squadron was formed. at Floyd Bennett Field in New York. It was commissioned an experimental squadron to determine whether or not the heliconter could be come a part of the Navy's defense team. The original Navy pilots were checked out by the Coast Guard. Initial work was commenced with two (2) early Sikorsky Helicopters designated the HNS-1 and HOS-1. In the fall of 1946, the squadron was transferred to the Naval Air Station, Lakehurst, New Jersey because better facilities were available there.
