Generative Numerical Control’s (GNC) strength lies in its ability to recognize a feature based Computer-Aided Design (CAD) solid model, apply rules to each feature to automatically create NC tool paths, cutter selections, and work instructions. Sikorsky Aircraft is exploiting this technology for use on its multi-spindle 6 -axis Ingersoll extrusion mill. Some of the benefits gained from this technology are a decrease in NC program creation, standardized shop work instructions and cutting tools, thus making Agile Manufacturing a reality. The logic or rules within GNC that create these processes are the backbone of the system. They contain the knowledge needed to machine a particular feature. These rules are not something that’s created “on the fly.” There is a sizable effort required to “capture” the knowledge of a given manufacturing process. But, once this knowledge is captured, a consistent manufacturing process can be established thereby enabling further refinement with a mission of constant improvement.
