To maintain steel the materials of first choice for the car body of the future its applications have to be adapted to the local necessities. Products are required to be at the same time lighter, more ridged and safer. Tailored Blanks (TB) with linear weld seam are the first development stage already available produced in Brazil. The target of this presentation is to discuss new developments in the field with great potential for future large-scale application.

THE FOLLOWING SUBJECTS ARE DISCUSSED:

  1. 1.
    Non-linear Tailored Blanks: TBs with linear weld seam are a compromise for several applications. By using of weld seams a sequence of linear segments or by using true non-linear seams (continuous curves) more advantages can be obtained from the TB technology. Several practical applications are discussed together with the corresponding production technology.
  2. 2.
    Tailored Strips: Some types of TBs can be more economically produced by using a continuous welding process. The technological development of the so-called Tailored Strips applying laser and high-frequency welding techniques is discussed and some examples of applications are given.
  3. 3.
    Tailored Tubes: The optimization of hydro forming components is only possible by employing specific tubes made for the application. The presentation gives an overview on the development of the Tailored Tube technology combining various materials and joining techniques.
  4. 4.
    Transition Joints: In some areas of the car body lightweight materials can substitute steel. The technology of Transition Joints deals with adequately joining these materials with the car steel body.
