In Japan for the past 7 years Showa Shell Sekiyu - Car Graphic (which drew 387 entries in 1987) and Honda Motor have held fuel efficient vehicle competitions on a hilly and a flat courses respectively. In both competitions the amount of fuel consumed was measured stringently not by volume but by weight with an electronic balance.
This paper presents a brief overview and technical highlights of the development and research efforts of fuel efficient engines, which achieved some Japanese fuel-mileage records over the last several years, at Aoyama Gakuin University. The review covers unique devices and the test results obtained from modified Honda 50cc motorbike engines and an originally designed 19 cc OHV engine.
