Field Performance of Detergent-Type Motor Oils in Gasoline-Powered Vehicles

ALTHOUGH virtually all manufacturers of automotive diesel engines are now recommending detergent oils of one kind of another, there has continued to be considerable difference of opinion regarding the use of additive oils in gasoline engines.

As his contribution to this phase of the problem, the author presents herewith the results of field tests for the principal types of gasoline-engine operation that are critical from the standpoint of engine deposits:

   Heavy-duty highway truck service.

   Light-duty city pickup and delivery service,

   High-speed cross-country passenger-car operation.
