- This paper primarily focuses on the ignition coil (IG) by enclosing factors like vibration of surrounding components, temperature etc. IG coils are the components which convert low battery voltage into high voltage required to generate the flashover between the electrodes on the spark plug so that combustion cycle can be started. Considering the importance of IG coils in engine operation which has a direct impact on the engine performance. Any failure in the IG coils is judged as a critical failure and encompasses severe repercussions. This paper intends to capture one such issue of White deposition on IG coils. White deposit was observed in IG Coils during new model development in bench level durability test. Failure investigation was carried out using various techniques such as vibration analysis, thermal analysis, white deposit chemical analysis etc. for identifying the root cause. Possible countermeasures were identified, and the issue was resolved by hardware design optimization. Design countermeasures have been validated in the engine bench testing and successfully implemented.
