Authors Abstract
Content
Four tests for measuring the transient directional response of passenger cars were performed to evaluate their respective merits. The tests examined were (1) ramp-step steer test, (2) reverse steer, (3) lane change (sinu-soidal steer), and (4) pseudo-random steer. The results show that each test is capable of contributing useful information concerning the transient directional response of the vehicle in specific operating scenarios. In addition, the findings indicate that no single test provides an accurate means for assessing the results obtained from the other test procedures. Hence a combination of these test procedures is recommended for evaluating the steering response of passenger cars.
