The disposition of used engine coolant has, in recent years, become an issue of environmental concern. Legislation controlling the disposition of used coolant coupled with the “cradle to grave” liability policy for wastes has helped create the demand for alternatives to waste coolant disposal by means of hauling. One alternative which reduces the amount of waste generated is coolant recycling.
General Motors Service Technology Group has conducted a study to objectively evaluate engine coolant recycling. All engine coolant recycling processes used in the field at the time of the study were included. Also included was a means to effectively evaluate off site recycling facilities accustomed to processing large volumes of used coolant.
The results of this study have provided the means for General Motors to construct and implement the first coolant recycling program of its kind with their dealers. Hopefully, this coolant recycling program will serve as a pilot program for other companies considering such a program.
