TAILOR-MADE oils, together with their engineering possibilities, are discussed in this survey of synthetic liquids developed during the past 10 years. Within that time, tailor-made oils have been especially designed to cover a wide range of applications where petroleum products do not function well enough.
Since these oils are homogeneous in the chemical sense, all of their properties are readily controlled and predicted. The author points out that chemists are using these inherent advantages to synthesize oils which provide necessary antiwear, antiseize, and corrosion-inhibiting properties. Various chemical additives take care of nearly all extreme conditions of lubrication.
