- The paper focuses on the energetic evaluation of various oxygenates in comparison with crude oil derived gasoline. Data on the production efficencies of alcohols and ethers are presented. The volumetric consumption of gasoline and the alternate oxygenate containing blends was measured during a standard driving cycle in a dynamometer test. The influence of the air/ fuel ratio on the fuel economy was determined. It was found that the volumetric consumption of blends containing oxygenates was generally less than expected by their lower heating values. The overall result shows equal consumption rates of gasoline and alternate blends. This energy gain may be used to pay completely for the higher energy requirement in the production of these components. Hence, no overall energy penalty results.
