Integrated Wiring System (IWS) wiring is an evolving technology that incorporates existing electrical components and signal organization into an improved wiring system that utilizes a modular design approach. One of the prime benefits of organized wiring systems is a reduction in weight which is partially realized by replacing individual shields with a cognizant arrangement of signals that separates noisy signals from sensitive signals, thus controlling crosstalk. Quantitative measurements of the crosstalk from one set of signal wires to another and methods for crosstalk control are the subject of this paper. Crosstalk within IWS was measured as a function of the source/victim separation in the harness. Contributions to isolation provided by interlayer foils and grounded guard wires was determined. Signal EMI categories were assigned based upon known signal characteristics. The results of crosstalk measurements were combined with the signal EMI categories to yield a matrix of signal organization rules for IWS. It was concluded that EMI from crosstalk can be controlled in a properly organized integrated wiring system.
