The Effects Of Latest Military Criteria On The Structural Weight Of The Hughes Advanced Attack Helicopter - YAH-64

The latest military requirements for helicopters have defined in very stringent terms several areas which previously had no specific requirements. In the structural area, the most notable of these are: a) Crashworthiness; b) Ballistic tolerance and fail-safety. In the past, these areas were left open, and the design evolved such that whatever resulted from the ship designed to the requirements of performance, stability and control, etc, was accepted. The effects of these new factors on the structural design of the Hughes YAH-64 are considered in this paper in the categories listed above, and values are derived for the additional weight required to meet these new criteria,
