- Sports Utility Vehicles (SUV) are designed largely for off - roading capability, superior ride & comparable handling characteristics analogous to sedans. Wheel Ends Systems Design engineer are exploring new avenues to improve the vehicle cornering and stability at high speeds. During vehicle cornering driver applies the required brake force to reduce the vehicle speed for maintaining vehicle direction and stability. Due to the combined cornering and braking, high frequencies vibrations will be dampened by suspension bushings and dampers. However, low frequency vibrations from the braking systems - brake judder will be present while driving the vehicle. These vibrations will be transferred through the chassis transfer path from brake disc, brake pad, knuckle and this creates discomfort to driver at the vehicle floor, brake pedal & steering wheel. Bearing offset, Bearing Orientation and bearing camber stiffness are the vital parameters among the wheel ends parts and significantly aids in brake disc deflection control which is responsible for brake judder. In this study the authors focused on the eliminating or reducing brake judder by increasing bearing camber stiffness, changing the bearing orientation with bearing offset.
