- In recent years, energy absorption by front members of automobile is important to reduce the impact on passengers in collision and, therefore, has been studied widely. On the other hand, once cracks are generated in the structure, the performance of energy absorption of the members is decreased seriously. Therefore, when impact energy absorption members are subjected to axial deformation by compression, it is required that no crack is generated in them. Figure 1 shows the example of the space frame body structure and the crush worthiness frame using the aluminum alloy. In this study, the effect of microstructures of the materials on the behavior of crack generation in axial compression of Al-Mg-Si alloy extrusions was investigated.
