Studies of four straight-graded oils were made in a constant absolute manifold pressure/constant absolute backpressure engine test served by a rapid oil exchange system. The studies showed that maintaining the engine in continuous operation and exchanging the oils quickly resulted in a sensitive, economical and rapid comparison of engine efficiency. The preliminary results also seemed to give promise that the technique may produce some basic insights into the frictional factors affecting fuel efficiency.
