Content
Power components such as crankshaft, piston, and conrod have to be designed with adequate safety factors while meeting the cost and timing targets. In order to meet these divergent requirements, it becomes necessary to incorporate CAE into the design process. Accuracy of CAE results is one of the primary requirements.
In this study, fillet strain for a V6, 60° crankshaft is compared to test data from a running engine. In addition, calculated piston strain in the skirt location is compared with test data at WOT conditions. Both results show good agreement with test data. This methodology can be used to speed up the design process considerably, while meeting the cost and timing requirements.
