Abstract
Content

Active development programs are directed to the reduction of drive system weight and cost, to increased reliability, and to improvement of other important attributes. Many of these programs are under the technical cognizance of the Applied Technology Laboratory (ATL)of Fort Eustis, Virginia. Under their sponsorship, Boeing Vertol has designed, analyzed, and tested advanced transmission components. These include highspeed tapered roller bearings, integrated bearings and gears, high-speed seals, and high-modulus composite gear housings. At this time, the major test efforts are complete on all except the housing. Design, analysis, and initial fabrication experience are described for the housing designs. A comparison of high-speed bearing designs is made. Early efforts developed a high-speed capability for tapered roller bearings. Current efforts are developing integral-shaft inner races for these bearings and also improving internal oil flow for increased tolerance to oil interruption.
