Improved safety and performance are key developmental focus areas within lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries. These needs are being driven from multiple markets including portable electronic devices, hybrid electric vehicles/electric vehicles (HEV/EV) and power tool applications. As these applications grow and mature, there is a continued demand for better performing, safer batteries. While many activities are focusing on a single aspect or component of a battery, it was realized that a systems approach or one that looks at all of the components of battery could afford the greatest total gains in the area of safety and performance. To this end, simultaneous development efforts are underway to achieve improvements in electrolytes, separators, and electrode binders for Li-ion batteries, with the ultimate goal to increase overall battery performance and safety. This paper will provide an overview of these development activities and progress towards the goals of improved safety and performance.
