In 1969 the Honda CB750 production motorcycle was equipped with the world's first disc brakes manufactured by Tokico, fig. 1. This brake was well received because of its smoothness and stability when compared with two leading shoe type drum brakes which were popular front brakes for motorcycles at that time. Since then, disc brakes for motorcycles became popular; additionally, application rate expanded quite rapidly to 50 cc mopeds within 5 years. Now all road sport type are equipeped with disc brakes. This paper gives an outline of the features for motorcycle disc brakes, as well as a brief explanation of future technical trends.
