Mobility, fire power and protection are the three most important characteristics of an Armoured Fighting Vehicle (AFV). Transmission system facilitates mobility to the fighting vehicle. Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment (CVRDE) is developing Automatic Transmission for Armoured Fighting vehicles which includes gearbox, steering system, braking system and control system. In the battle field, AFVs have to operate at different gradients & side slopes. The Automatic Transmission system being developed by CVRDE is a hydro-mechanical automatic transmission in which hydraulic oil is used for lubrication & control of various systems of it. A Tilt Test Facility (TTF) has been designed, developed, and installed at CVRDE to simulate different angles of gradients from +35° to - 35° & side slopes from +20° to -20°. The TTF enables to evaluate the functional aspects of the transmission system at different angles. The TTF consists of two tiltable platforms, Rotary actuators (gearbox), 200 kW Drive motor, Hydraulic lock, Mechanical lock, Angle position sensors, Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) controlled motors, Pressure sensors, Thermocouples, Vibration sensors and Data Acquisition & Monitoring System(DAMS). This paper will briefly describe about the specification, salient features & development design of the TTF.
