The objective of this work is to study and evaluate an alternative way to increase the air flow into the combustion chamber of a spark-ignition engine. For this purpose an electric ducted fan (EDF) was used to improve the overall volumetric efficiency, increasing the performance of the engine. Looking for better volumetric efficiency with minimum mechanical adjustments, the introduction of an electrician in the intake system of an engine provides a gradual increase of power according to the needs of the driver. Using this approach it is expected to reduce mechanical losses in the admission and improve the volumetric efficiency of the engine. This increased efficiency will cost just the generation of electric power required to drive the fan. The fan was installed in a FIAT Palio 1.6 16V and in a FIAT Palio 1.0 8V and tested in a chassis dynamometer. The obtained results indicate that the used methodology was appropriate to the proposed objectives and a demonstration prototype was built.
