Authors Abstract
Content
Progress in the application of well-known pollution-control techniques to existing engines is demonstrated in relation to the visibility of the exhaust smoke plume in the RB211 and Olympus 593 engines. The reasons for the apparently protracted nature of this progress are discussed and shown to be related to the maintenance of safety and durability standards.
Methods being used to reduce the other combustion-generated pollutants are mentioned, especially in relation to the standards promulgated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). A review of some problems associated with measurement and sampling of pollutants is given.
