Evaluating a component for endurance is a complicated process. Particularly when it involves wear and tear of components, it is necessary to understand all the parameters contributing to endurance, assess their effects and simulate the conditions in the rig. This paper discusses the data acquisition of various parameters on the road and instrumentation and analysis techniques developed for an oil pump for a motorcycle. A specialized test rig to collect all the data in the lab is also proposed.
Most of the time, it is necessary to accelerate the testing in order to reduce the test duration within practical limits. This makes it more difficult. Further, it is necessary to co-relate the rig and road life. This paper describes the development of an accelerated wear test methodology on the oil pump for a motorcycle and its correlation with road life as well as existing long duration lab test.
