Different engine designed parameters are optimized to harness the maximum benefits of CNG fuel. The present work will highlight the development of a dedicated CNG engine with multipoint sequential gas injection system. The study comprises the combustion chamber design intake system design, CNG supply system, ignition system and electronic control system of a heavy duty CNG engine. Experimental investigation has been carried out with different compression ratio and different Combustion chamber shape. It has been observed that CR of 12:1 with bowl shape combustion chamber gives better results. Detailed investigation with lean burn technology was carried out, NOx exhaust emission was controlled effectively without resorting to EGR.
The developed dedicated CNG engine meet Euro III (ESC) regulation requirement with oxidation catalytic converter. In the meantime, the problem of high oil consumption of CNG engine was solved through structural improvement of piston rings. The test results showed that a dedicated CA6SE3-21N CNG engine possessed the rated power of base diesel engine together with lower fuel consumption and proven durability.
