This paper presents in its general section the history and current technological levels of designing, testing and manufacturing of basic power drive components : torque converters, transmissions and axles. The case - study section depicts the typical new product development process and sequence as exemplified by a family of axles for wheel - mounted excavators with 0.4 - 0.9 cu. m bucket capacity.
The paper presents the design objectives technical requirements and some selected results of laboratory and field tests of the axle prototypes.
