Content
Indian engine manufacturers are expected to meet increasingly stringent exhaust gas emission regulations in their domestic markets. This paper offers a brief description of engine developments from Euro-I to Euro-III and considers routes to low emission Euro-IV engines and beyond. Technologies such as Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR), Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) and Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) are discussed, and the suitability of turbocharger technology available for low emission engine applications is evaluated.
The emission effects on compressor operation and corresponding turbine performance requirements are considered and engine test bed and gas stand test data is presented to highlight the advantages of turbocharger technologies developed specifically for low emission applications:
  • High compressor map width/high efficiency at high pressure ratios
  • MWE (Map Width Enhancement) developments, increased compressor map width
  • Low flow, high efficiency turbines
The paper will also characterize the Indian Automotive Duty Cycle and show how Technology is being developed to meet the specific durability, reliability and performance needs of the Indian Marketplace.
