Development of a Folding Composite Stabilator for the Sikorsky H-60 Helicopter

Weight reduction constitutes an important goal in most aerospace related engineering projects; however, it takes on special significance within the context of helicopter aerostructure design. The benefits of weight reduction on helicopter speed, range, payload and high altitude performance are dramatic. However, given the helicopter's tough operating environment, weight reduction cannot be achieved at the expense of functional requirements such as strength, durability and dynamic performance. The challenge of reducing the weight of rotary wing aerostructures becomes even more pronounced when combined with the concurrent goal of reducing both acquisition and maintenance costs.
